Storage

Storage in Fulham for the gap in the middle

Chains collapse. Renovations overrun. A posting comes through before the flat sells. Storage is what stops the gap between two dates becoming a crisis — and the way the goods are held matters more than most people realise.

There is a lot of storage in Fulham. Drive down Townmead Road or past Fulham Broadway and you will pass several large self-storage buildings, and for some jobs they are exactly the right answer. But if what you are actually doing is putting a household away between two moves, a self-storage unit is usually the wrong tool, and the reason is handling.

Every time goods are moved loose they are at risk. Loose into a van, loose across a car park, loose into a lift, loose into a room. Our storage removes most of that. Your things are packed and inventoried at your Fulham address, loaded straight into wooden containers there, and those containers are sealed before they leave your street. They are not opened again until they come back to you.

Containerised storage against a self-storage unit

Both are legitimate. They solve different problems, and it is worth knowing which problem you have before you sign anything.

Consideration Containerised storage what we do Self-storage unit the units around SW6
Who does the moving We do. Goods are collected from your Fulham address by the crew who packed them. You do, or you pay someone separately to. The unit is a room; getting things into it is your problem.
How goods are held Loaded into wooden containers at your property, sealed there, and not opened again until redelivery. Stacked loose in a room you rent. Handled every time you visit.
Access By appointment — containers are brought out for you. Not a drop-in arrangement. Whenever the facility is open. Your own key or code.
Best for A whole household between moves, a renovation, a posting abroad, a collapsed chain. Things you need to reach often — stock, tools, sports kit, a business that needs regular access.
What you handle Nothing. You get an inventory and a redelivery date. The van, the trolley, the lift queue and the padlock.

If the second column describes you better, take a unit — we will not pretend otherwise to win the job.

How a Fulham storage collection works

It begins the same way a removal does: a survey, so we know the volume and the access. On the day, the crew packs and wraps exactly as they would for a move — blanket wrap on upholstery, crates for mirrors and marble, wardrobe cartons so clothes travel hanging.

Everything is then listed on an inventory as it goes into the containers. You get a copy. The containers are sealed at your address, loaded onto the vehicle and taken to the warehouse, where they are stacked and logged. Nothing between your front door and the warehouse floor involves your things being handled twice.

When you are ready, you book a redelivery. The containers come back, the seals come off in front of you, and the crew unloads into the rooms you point at. If your new place is also in SW6, that second leg is often a short job; if you have moved to the country or abroad, it becomes the delivery half of a longer move.

What tends to put Fulham households into storage

  • A chain that has slipped. You have to be out and you cannot get in. The most common reason by a distance, and usually the most urgent.
  • A renovation. Fulham terraces get extended and reconfigured constantly, and a building site is no place for a sofa.
  • Downsizing. Moving from a house off Studdridge Street into a mansion flat means the flat cannot take all of it. Store what you are not ready to part with.
  • Going abroad for a while. A posting to Europe or the Gulf, the London property let out furnished or unfurnished, the personal things put away.
  • A rental gap. Tenancy ends before the next one starts, and a hotel room does not hold a flat's worth of furniture.

What we will not store

Nothing perishable, nothing flammable or explosive, no gas bottles, no paint or solvents, no plants and nothing living. Documents, jewellery, cash and irreplaceable personal papers are better kept with you than in any warehouse. If you are unsure about a specific item, ask before the collection — it is a much easier conversation then than on the day.

Cover while goods are in store

Storage cover is arranged separately from the goods-in-transit cover that applies during a move, and it is based on what you declare the contents to be worth. You will be asked to value them. The limits and the terms are set out in the storage agreement, and we would rather you read it before collection than discover a limit afterwards.

Storage usually arrives attached to something else — a house move, a flat move, or a move out of the country. Tell us the whole picture and we will quote it as one job rather than three.

Straight answers

Storing a Fulham household, in plain terms

How does your storage actually work?

Containerised. Your goods are inventoried and loaded into wooden containers at your address, the containers are sealed, and they go into a secure warehouse still sealed. Nothing is handled loose in between, which is the main reason it comes out in the condition it went in.

Is that different from a self-storage unit in Fulham?

Yes. With self storage you rent a room, you drive your own things there and you get your own key. With containerised storage we do the moving, the goods stay sealed, and you book a redelivery instead of turning up. Self storage suits you if you need constant access; containerised suits you if you are storing a household between moves.

Can I get at my things while they are in store?

With notice, yes — we book an access visit and have your containers brought out to be opened. It is not a drop-in arrangement, so if you know you will need regular access, a self-storage unit is genuinely the better tool and we will say so.

What can I not put into storage?

Anything perishable, anything flammable or explosive, gas bottles, paint and solvents, plants, and anything living. Documents and valuables are better kept with you. If you are unsure about a particular item, ask before the collection rather than after.

Our chain has collapsed. Can storage be arranged quickly?

That is a very common reason people call us, and we will always try to make it work at short notice. Whether we can depends on warehouse space and crew availability at that moment, so call rather than email if the completion date is about to move.

Is it insured?

Cover while goods are in store is arranged separately from goods-in-transit cover and is based on the declared value of what you are storing. You will be asked to value the contents; the terms and the limits are set out in the storage agreement before anything is collected.

Dates gone wrong? Tell us and we'll find the space.

If a completion has just moved and you need somewhere for a household to go, ring rather than email — it is quicker and we can check the warehouse while you are on the phone.
