Man and van

Man and van in Fulham, for the jobs that aren't a whole house

Not every move needs a crew of four and a Luton. A room, a studio, a sofa that has to go up three flights — that is a driver, a van and someone who will actually carry it rather than leaving it in the lobby.

Man and van is the most misused phrase in London moving. Half the people advertising it will drive a van to your address and watch you load it. We do not work that way. If you book a man and van in Fulham with us, the man carries — that is the entire reason you are paying for a person as well as a vehicle.

It suits smaller jobs. Where a full house removal brings a survey, a packing team, materials and a large vehicle, this is deliberately lighter: a shorter booking, a van sized to the load, and either one or two people depending on what you have told us about the stairs.

The sort of thing we get called for

  • A studio or one-bed near Fulham Broadway going to another flat in SW6
  • One room out of a house share on Dawes Road or Munster Road
  • A sofa collected from a showroom and carried up to a second-floor flat
  • A marketplace pickup that turned out to be far heavier than the listing suggested
  • A few pieces of furniture going into or out of storage
  • A student move at the start or end of term, with the boxes and not much else
  • Clearing a flat back to empty for a landlord check-out
  • Taking three pieces to a relative in Putney and coming back with two

One person or two

This is the question that matters most and the one people answer wrong. A single driver is fine for a ground-floor collection, a lift building, or a load of boxes. The moment there are three flights of Victorian stairs and a two-seater sofa, one person is not a service, it is an injury waiting to happen.

So when you get in touch, tell us the floor, tell us whether there is a lift, and tell us the heaviest single thing in the load. We would far rather send two people and finish quickly than send one and have the booking overrun.

Where the van can stop

Fulham parking applies to small moves exactly as it applies to large ones. Around Parsons Green and the Sulivan grid the residents bays fill early in the morning. On the North End Road there are loading restrictions at certain times. The Broadway end gets congested and gets worse on a match day.

For a short booking a bay suspension is usually overkill, so the answer is normally a well-chosen loading spot and a short shuttle. But if your street is genuinely hopeless, say so and we will look at it properly rather than arriving and circling.

Collections and deliveries

A decent share of this work is not a move at all. It is a sofa from a Fulham Road showroom, a dining table bought secondhand in Chiswick, a wardrobe being collected from a house clearance in Wandsworth. For those we need the collection address, the name of whoever is releasing the item, and any order or reference number they will ask for at the door.

We will not, however, take rubbish. Removing waste requires a waste carrier licence and that is a different business. If what you actually need is a clearance rather than a move, we will tell you and point you somewhere licensed.

When you need more than this

If the load is a whole flat, a whole house, or anything needing packing materials and a survey, you want flat removals or house removals instead. Describe what you have got and we will tell you which one you are — we do not make money by selling you the wrong size of job.

Straight answers

Small moves, straight answers

What is the difference between man and van and a full removal?

Scale and crew. Man and van is a driver with a van, sometimes a second pair of hands, for a studio, a room, a few pieces or a delivery that needs carrying properly. A full removal brings a larger vehicle, a team, packing materials and a survey behind it. If you are not sure which you need, describe the load and we will tell you honestly.

Will the driver help carry, or is it a drop-off?

They carry. That is the point of booking a man and van rather than hiring a van yourself. If there are three flights and no lift, say so when you book so we send two people instead of one.

Can you collect from a shop or a warehouse and deliver to a Fulham flat?

Yes — a sofa from a showroom, a marketplace pickup, a piece of furniture being collected from a house clearance. We need the collection address, whoever is releasing it and any reference number they will ask for.

Do you take single heavy items like a piano or a safe?

Not as a standard man and van booking. Pianos and safes need specialist equipment and the right insurance, so tell us in advance and we will either bring the right kit or be straight with you that it is a specialist job.

Is there a minimum booking?

There is a minimum length of booking rather than a minimum load — the van and the driver have to get to you either way. What that looks like depends on where you are and when, so it goes in the written quote.

Describe the load and we'll tell you what it needs.

Floor, lift or no lift, and the heaviest thing in it. That is usually enough for us to come back with a figure.
